Galena Child

I like to lie in the hammock
on the back court and listen to the soft summer sound:
doves are murmuring in drowsy tones, chickens cluck contentedly,
and the breeze sighs in the hemlock hedge.
Sunday morning church bells are ringing,
and all over the lovely garden and great house hovers a deep peace,
so sweet that it drifts into a small girl's heart and makes her want to cry.
Nothing can happen to this.

from Galena Child,
The memoirs of Katherine Felt Barber

Katherine Felt Barber was the granddaughter of Lucuis Felt, the original builder of the home. She wrote the story of what life was like in the great house on the hill and the lead mining town of Galena during the 1870's. We are fortunate to have this poetic prose and owe Katherine a debt of gratitude. Available at the Felt Manor Guest House
